Eternity. how depressing

i found myself wondering about life after death. some believe in heaven and hell, and the concept, marvelously thought out as it is, sounds so curious to me! i mean gosh, eternal damnation or luxury based on what we have done in this earth? if god is as powerful and loving as we all make him out to be, why does he need to test our loyalty before we qualify to sit by him later on? this is a sensitive subject i realize and if at any point i offend you or your beliefs then i apologize, this is just a simple kid's point of view on the matter and correct me anytime if you will, please do!

first point, we are dead. all physical form will be abandoned (so i hear because i haven't died myself) so only the soul goes to this afterlife. supposing we've been a good samaritan, we are granted the exclusive pass to heaven correct? judging from your lack of response i will assume it's a yes. but this constant indulgence, wouldn't we eventually be wearyof it? right now, the thought of being able to do anything you want without other people judging you and what not seems like an ideal thing but in practice, everything comes to an end, even our satisfaction level on a certain activity or item will decrease (gossen's first law, i know, my refferences have grown in sophistication a bit). it's like in 7th grade when i said i loved pie and dad would get me pie everyday to eat for breakfast and lunch and in 2 months or so the sight of pie would sicken my stomach (and the sophistication lowers..). i think that happiness isn't for eternity and it should not be. so for god to give us absolutely everything we wanted for an unlimited amount of time would grow to be meaningless, glory, fame, love are things everyone will have access to and then it would just be like dust, it's everywhere and it would not have any value to its name whatsoever!

hell on the other hand, the place where all the despicable people go to get tortured. again i point out that only our souls would survive the journey there and remembering the fact that the soul has no physical form, it can undergo all kinds of physical abuse and feel nothing in the end. bring on the waterboarding, bring on the whips and chains but it won't matter, i won't feel it. although this is if infact the kind of torture they mean are the physical types, psychological types that are far more traumatizing on the other hand is plausible. right now i'm having troubles picturing the devil (assuming he has nothing better to do) stading in front of me saying things like you were an accident, your parents never liked you, your ass is so fat you can't get on aeroplanes or your hair looks awful who are you kidding? but i think something else more torturing would be being taped into a chair, your eyelids are forced opened so that you can't close it and have a tv playing street fighters the movie on loop. so you have to put up with the cheesy humour, horrible computer graphics, godawful acting and fug people for a freaking eternity. that my friend, that's quite frightening and cleaning up my act is starting to appeal to me.

to quote michelangelo though "when a lord holds his servant bound in prison, with harsh chains and devoid of any hope, that servant becomes so accustomed to his wretched state that he would scarcely ask for freedom" and even if i'm not supposed to interpret it wuite so literally, i think it's pretty right. i haven't been a slave nor been tortured so i have no direct knowledge on the subject but again, with the diminishing utility in mind, i think it's not so impossible that people will grow accustomed to the torture. but seriously, isn't it awfully hypocritical of god to torture people when he wants us not to torture others? one might argue "oh HE's not torturing them, the devil is" yeah ok that makes it all better that he's just the big guy who approves of it but does nothing to stop such attrocity. another question in my mind is: where would sinful masochists go? i mean if they take pleasure from pain then should they really be punished by pain? won't hell pretty much be maso heaven? unless they get front row to street fighters...

and what of atheists who defy his existence? it's said that they are doomed for damnation. even if this atheist has not harmed a single fly, or used his beliefs as an excuse to hurt others, or spoke of everyone indiscriminately, an atheist who isn't blinded by some reward in exchange for their loyalty? where do they go compared to religious men of high confidence? would they just perish into empty space somewhere beyond the galaxy we know of?

one theory i'm sticking to is: hell would throw better parties, no offense but seriously, i'll bet they would have hookers, booze, and good music!

---
what about people who decide to get married in heaven? would they have to be stuck together forever or will divorce be allowed? kind of unfair for folks who are against it..

Hey I'm trying to find the simplest and the politest way to say this. Life after death is actually the starting-point of further progress for man. Those in paradise are advancing to higher and higher stages in knowledge and perfection of faith. Hell is meant to purify those in it of the effects of their bad deeds, and so make them fit for further advancement.

"if god is as powerful and loving as we all make him out to be, why does he need to test our loyalty before we qualify to sit by him later on?"

God created us, and we know that to thank Him we should only worship Him. This is an instinct He has created us with. He did not just leave us, rather He sent prophets for us. (these prophets had miracles as proof)

"so for god to give us absolutely everything we wanted for an unlimited amount of time would grow to be meaningless, glory, fame, love are things everyone will have access to and then it would just be like dust, it's everywhere and it would not have any value to its name whatsoever!"

The theory that humans made will never be the same with God's theory. We don't know what will happen when our lives end, nor what will we think after (if we are still be able to think), but anyways, He has created us, He has created this world, and of course He has arranged what will happen after, based on what we do in our lives. He has given us clue, about heaven and hell, and I think you already know the difference, but both are eternal. So why would one choose the bad eternity when they have chance to get the good one? Remember my friend, hellfire is eternal. It never ends, and we never die when we go there, if we go there.

"isn't it awfully hypocritical of god to torture people when he wants us not to torture others?"

The word torture was made by humans. But simply, what God would do to those who torture people is just like the bad grades you get when you didn't study for exams. It is fair, one would get something based on what they did. No one died for your sins.

"where would sinful masochists go?"

Hell has 7 doors. The level of hell depends on the degree of offenses. Suffering is both physical and spiritual.

"even if this atheist has not harmed a single fly, or used his beliefs as an excuse to hurt others, or spoke of everyone indiscriminately, an atheist who isn't blinded by some reward in exchange for their loyalty?"

It's like, when your boyfriend gives you flower, you will thank him. God gives you more than just a flower, He creates you, gives you life. It's not about the reward the atheists think they don't need, but to believe in Him is the first way to thank Him. He's looking for your awareness. Of course God will never force you to thank Him, and that's what hells are for. If you know what I mean..

"one theory i'm sticking to is: hell would throw better parties, no offense but seriously, i'll bet they would have hookers, booze, and good music!"

God has sent you the preserved book, he made an open challenge in that book, show him if there are any mistakes in the book, thus far nothing in the book had been proven false or wrong (People tried and eventually failed), and also it has a lot of scientific evidence that supports most of it, not to mention prophecies..

Wow, it's a long 'response' but I hope that answers. If you still have questions, I'll be very happy to explain more :)

first of all, thank you for reading into it and taking the time to respond in such a detailed manner, very much! i am intrigued by this so rather than receiving trolls or responses like "it is because it is" i appreciate your comment very much.

ok so i have actually been told that hell is a process of purification so after we've paid our 'debts' we can go to heaven. so suppose that you've been so awful that say you end up in the 7th level of hell, would you have to pass the other 6 to get to heaven? how does one know when they are ready or does God decide this for us? won't that mean that hell is in fact not eternal in the sense that we might not end up there forever.

concerning atheist again, you say that God isn't forcing anyone to believe in Him yet punishes us if we don't doesn't this mean indirectly, He is threatening us? it's almost like blackmail to me, do it or i will hurt you and because we don't want to be hurt (naturally) we would do whatever it is we were asked to do.

on the fairness of the torture. say in this life we have stabbed so many people and in return we are stabbed to many times in hell, yes it's fair but that doesn't mean it's justifiable or ethical. it's like if a murderer who drowns his victim is punished by being drowned as well. it's not ethical when we do it because it's inhumane but it's ok if he does it, why? because He is the almighty creator? or just because He's not human, the values of humanity does not apply? i think it's more that i don't agree with the whole eye for an eye justification because for example, the eye of a researcher might be worth more than that of a blind man.

on prophets, why have they stopped coming? or is it because we just don't notice them due to the fact that so many people are in denial and praise so much the technology we are given so 'miracles' can be explained by average science. i think that people of today need just as much convincing as those back in the biblical times.

again thank you and sorry if i offended you, i hope you're still lurking around the blog so you read this haha

Firstly, no one will come out of Hell except sinful believers who believed in the Oneness of God in this life and believed in the specific prophet sent to them. The polytheists and unbelievers will reside in it forever. So some say yes it is a process of purification (for some). About the time, since the exact nature of these things (paradise or hell) cannot be known in this world because they are in an entirely different world where our ideas of space, time, feelings, etc. do not apply, only God knows when (the time here will be very different with the afterlife time, a day there equals to 1000 years here, the book said). This time I think can be 'equal' with the word eternal human made.
“Surely, those who disbelieve and did wrong; God will not forgive them, nor will He guide them to any way except the way of Hell, to dwell therein forever.” (4:168-169)
“And whosoever disobeys God and His Messenger, then surely, for him is the fire of Hell, he shall dwell therein forever.” (72:23)
“They will long to leave the Fire, but never will they leave there from; and theirs will be a lasting torment.” (5:37)

Next, atheist. I don't think the word threatening is correct because the truth is, humans were told to thank the Creator, to worship Him, and He promises us a beautiful place to go after we finish our lives, and for those who don't want to, He promises them a scary place, it's like a deal and everyone can choose their own path. If atheists choose not to believe, there is a consequence. Yes we have to do whatever we asked to, but in reality, it's true that no one other than prophets can, because we basically have intuitions, feelings, etc etc. But since He is the most forgiving and the most merciful, as long as we ask for forgiveness, assure to stop doing it and intend never to do it again, we have good deeds then.

The torture. There is an accumulation for all the things we do in life, when one do bad more than good, they will go to hell (not to be sarcastic lol). To kill people or to hijack a plane or simply, to not believe in God mean they do bad deeds and for this, they will get punishment.
“Surely, the disbelievers will be in the torment of Hell to abide therein forever. (The torment) will not be lightened for them, and they will be plunged into destruction with deep regrets, sorrows and in despair therein. We wronged them not, but they were the wrongdoers. And they will cry: ‘O Malik! Let your Lord make an end of us’ He will say: ‘Surely, you shall abide forever.’ Indeed We have brought the truth to you, but most of you have a hatred for the truth” (43:74-78)

The reason why God sent prophets to humanity in different times and places is to communicate His messages. Now, since the messages have been completely sent, whatever they need is written in the books (Bible, Quran, etc), the problem now is how many people care to open and read the book again?

Oh I think I didn't really get what you're saying by the maso heaven but I get it now, and yeah, the maso wouldn't think the same as they did in their life, they wouldn't have pleasure anymore, only regrets and pain left. Doesn't sound like heaven, does it?

Hey it's okay! I would love to answer if you still have questions and sorry for creep around your blog, lol
